Discography is a procedure your doctor may use to help determine the source of your low back or neck pain. As intervertebral discs break down they may become painful. If there is no obvious herniation, or rupture, of the disc on imaging studies, then discography may be used to determine if the degenerating disc is the source of your pain. This procedure is done under sterile conditions in our in-office procedure suite. The area to be injected is cleansed and numbed using local anesthetic. A needle is inserted into the disc using X-ray guidance. Contrast dye is injected into the disc to see if it reproduces your usual pain. This can help your doctor in deciding further treatment options for you.
